Applying for a passport has always been easy for Iowa residents; however, there are some steps one needs to know to complete the process. Step 1: Determine Which Passport You Need

Before beginning the application process, you should know which type of passport is required.

1. First-Time Passport: First-time applicants must appear in person at an authorized passport acceptance facility. This includes a passport photo, accompanying documents, and a proof of U.S. citizenship.

2. Passport Renewal: If your passport is expired or about to expire, you can renew it by mail if it meets specific criteria. Passport renewals by mail are only available if

• your passport is undamaged
• issued within the last 15 years
• you were over the age of 16 when it was issued

Step 2: Collect Required Documents

The only secret to a successful passport application is the submission of all the necessary documents. In the case of first-time applicants and minors, the following apply:

1. Proof of U.S. Citizenship:

• Original Birth Certificate: A certified copy of the birth certificate will suffice if born within the United States.
• Previous Passport: In the case of renewals, your previous passport will serve as proof of US citizenship.
• Naturalization Certificate: If you are a naturalized citizen, you need to present a photocopy of your naturalization certificate.

2. Proof of Identity:

• Current, Government-Issued ID: One usually takes an option between Driver's license /State ID/Military ID.
• Parental Identification: Parents or guardians are needed to produce proof of identity for minors.

3. Passport Application Form (DS-11):

• Form DS-11: This is the application form for your first passport. It must be filled out in person. One can also fill it up on the computer and print to post.
• Form DS-82: You need this form if you are renewing your passport by mail.

4. Passport Photo:
